all about it
Band is all about learning and fun. I can tell you I sure do a fair share of both. This is my 3rd year in band I have learned so much and come so far. I started out my highschool band career only knowing how to play a Bb scale, and the only concert I had played in was in a band of about 9 students. I remember my very first day in band; we played Chorale 4 to start off the year, and I was in complete shock at what a full sound the band had comparitively. Looking back, I laugh at the fact that I actually struggled to keep up with the band on something as simple as Chorale 4. This year, more than any other year before, I feel like I am caught up to the other students that have been doing band since 5th grade. I have also picked up a couple of other instruments since starting band. Currently, I absolutely love playing the ukulele. I don't think I am too good at it, but I really do it for the fun of playing a ukulele. Music used to be a struggle for me, and when I practiced my flute at home, I would get frustrated that I couldn't do what other kids in band could, and that I didn't know as much as them. Practicing was stressful, but as I pushed myself to do it more, it became a source of stress relief. Now, if I am having a bad day or am stressed, this is what I turn to for help.
The band I started in was nothing past a joke. With 9 students, our music choices were limited. Not only that, but majority of the students were in the band because their parents forced them to join. Even back then, I practiced a lot. I went home the weekend before band started and I remember playing for 7 hours straight. I was determined to learn all the notes I could. I went to the first day of band practice, and the teacher was explaining to students how to put their instruments together. We didn't even have full band practice really ever. I was at the top of the class in band at Nettle Creek, that's why I felt so frustrated at being behind in high school band. I went from the top to far below the bottom real quick. That only pushed me to do better, and now I cannot wait for my career in band to continue, and I can't wait to continue learning.
